Facebook Benedictam

Facebook came out in the year of our Lord 2004, and now it has consumed the personal data of over 1 billion people on God’s green earth. Just so you can get a full idea of the impact that social media is having on our world take a minute to watch this video:

The key and point is that social media is a little to big to ignore. When you think about it, it is big enough to be a god. In fact, I would go so far to say that people worship their Social Networks like they do a god with greater devotion to their likes, favorites and notification than some Christians have to the bible.

However, the crazy thing is that many protestants, catholics,  and people of all religions fall into this category of SocialMediacism (the worshiping of social media). In addition we see that in light of this mass conversion, that the natural response for those desperate to save their soul  is the same one that is so often given toward all goods when the first shred of abuse begins to emerge. We shun it.We see this in many religions all the time; the shunning of alcohol, shunning of art/images, shunning of caffeine.  The problem is that instead of trying to find the proper way to use these goods, for fear of abusing these things, we toss them out and condemn them. So what is the other choice aside from worshiping social media or burning it at the stake?

Well we must find the Golden Mean.

We cannot curse social media because, in and of itself, it is not bad. However, there is no way that anyone should receive any form of self worth via the number of likes or favorites they get on Facebook and Twitter.

The solution is not to glorify social media nor curse it, the solution is to sanctify! Let every post be for the glory of God. People should enter your Facebook and it should be an accurate portrayal of the fact that you are here on this earth to know, love and serve God. And how do we show that we know, love and serve God? We do so through every thought, action, deed and omission; and today we can add with every Facebook post, tweet, pin, beep, blop and plop.

So how can you do this? By following the Catholic Dormitory.. nah Just kidding… or am I? Really the internet is full of so much garbage that we really have to go out of our way to make sure our news-feeds stay clean and are filled with constant reminders of why we are here on this green earth. We are here to know, love and serve God! Nothing else, and so everything on this earth should be for that.
